Lasix (furosemide) is a diuretic predominantly used to treat edema and hypertension (high blood pressure). • Doses may be taken all at once or split into 2 smaller doses.
• Doses should be taken at least 6 hours apart.

Like dosing, duration of treatment is very difficult to generalize; the medication may be taken for days, weeks, or years.

A noticeable reduction in edema usually occurs within the first day of use, along with increased urination.

Treating Hypertension with Lasix

As an antihypertensive medication, Lasix may be used on its own, or along with similar treatments if Lasix alone is not sufficient to manage blood pressure. It works by inhibiting the re-absorption of sodium in the kidneys; the sodium is then excreted in urine. Frequent urination also expels water from the body, reducing the volume in the bloodstream, further lowering blood pressure.

Treatment is fairly straightforward, though there may be some modifications according to individual circumstances:

• Most patients are prescribed 80 mg per day, though this may vary for some individuals.
• Each daily dose should be divided into two smaller doses, taken 8 to 12 hours apart.
• Taking with food may ease nausea, but is not mandatory.
• Be alert for symptoms of low blood pressure if taking more than one medication designed to treat hypertension.

When given for hypertension, treatment with Lasix is typically long-term. Regular doctor exams are advisable to be sure the medication is working as intended and electrolyte balances are being maintained.
